What Does Your NFC Team Need to Do Before 2012?

With the regular season now over in the NFL, I thought I'd give my take on what each team needs to do (or what I think they will do in the off season). I'll break them down division by division (and I will include teams in the playoffs)

Dallas Cowboys

First off, I think Jason Garrett stays. One more bad year (aka not making the playoffs) and then I think Garrett could be on some thin ice. Part of the problem with this year's squad was every running back they had seemed to get hurt. I heard even Tony Dorsett was having knee problems. I think the Cowboys would be well off to try and trade Miles Austin. If you could get a 3rd round pick or better for Miles, I would do it. Defensively and up front on the offensive line is where they need help, and that's where they should be looking to address the problems.

New York Giants
If the Giants don't beat the Falcons, I think one can make a case for Tom Coughlin to be fired. The Giants have been like the hare the past few years and have finished the race like the tortoise. I think the Giants do have a budding star on their team in Victor Cruz though. He has established himself as one of Eli's trusted targets, to where I think the Giants could look at dealing Nicks or Manningham if it could net them something of worth in return. I think another thing the Giants should look at doing is continue to get younger on the defensive side of the ball.

Philadelphia Eagles
If this team had a full off season, I think they would have been better this season then their 8-8 record. If I was in charge of the team, I would want a DEFENSIVE guy as my defensive coordinator and not a former offensive line coach. I don't see Andy Reid being fired, but I don't see this team as the dream team either. Vick was overpaid when he got his contract extension. DeSean Jackson is a free agent, and I would look at replacing him with another Jackson (Vincent). Otherwise, I think the Eagles will be fine, but at the start of next season, will probably still be looking up at the Packers.

Washington Redskins

Let's just get this out of the way early; Rex Grossman is not the quarterback of the future. Can they get Robert Griffin III? Maybe, maybe not. It depends if the Vikings (I know they selected Christian Ponder in Round 1) or the Browns decide they need to select a quarterback. If they don't, then the Redskins will either need to explore a trade, or probably taking a quarterback later then Round 1. Free Agents they could opt for could include Jason Campbell (don't see that road being travelled again), Kyle Orton or Matt Flynn. Other then that, I think the Redskins have firmly decided on Roy Helu being the man at running back. I think they could use upgrades at WR. Defensively, they could use upgrades too (you give up 34 points to the Eagles in the last week, you need to do some upgrades).

NFC North

Chicago Bears

Re-sign Matt Forte and getting Jay Cutler healthy would be a start. Also, I think the receivers really need some upgrades (I would have signed Terrell Owens in the off season). There are several options at free agency that are better then what the Bears have right now (Dwayne Bowe, Pierre Garcon and others). Defensively, I think the Bears might want to look for a couple of players, because you don't want to have a situation to where that defense gets old real quick and that could happen if you totally neglect it.

Detroit Lions
First off, I don't think you panic because of Week 17. Flynn had a career day and the Packers offensive players could change their jerseys to where everyone says TNT because they are very explosive. You don't need to mess with the defensive line if you are the Lions but might want to address the linebackers and secondary. Also, I'd be a little concerned with the running game. Best is proving to be injury prone, plus with concussions you never know. I'd look for a durable running back, but it doesn't have to be a 1,000 or 2,000 yard rusher, but someone that is going to at least keep defense's honest.

Green Bay Packers
Aaron Rodgers is the man. I don't think the Packers need an upgrade at running back. If I am a Packers fan, the only thing that worries me is the defense. I would just tell them bear down and not rely on the offense to score 80 points every game. Other then that, the only thing that will stop Green Bay is Green Bay.

Minnesota Vikings
I don't think the Vikings need to fire Leslie Frazier. I don't think the Vikings need to draft a quarterback. I do think the Vikings need some help up front and on the defense. Even with Adrian Peterson out for a while, maybe for the first few games of next year, I think the Vikings can get by. I think a WR would help out Ponder a lot and long term, I believe the Vikings can be okay.

NFC South

Atlanta Falcons
One thing is for sure, they are set at a lot of the offensive skill positions. I always think teams can improve up front on both ends of the ball. Defensively, they could probably look to use some secondary help, especially with the NFC South being a pass happy division with Drew Brees and Cam Newton leading the way. I would also re-sign Curtis Lofton, so you don't have to add linebacker to that need list.

New Orleans Saints
Re-sign Drew Brees I believe is probably a formality. After that, (Guard) Carl Nicks & Wide Receiver Marques Colston are priorities. Defensively, they have to get better. I think counting on out shooting people is a recipe for disaster. But, don't ignore Brees. Get that done and then you can take care of everything else.

Carolina Panthers
For one, hope that Cam Newton's 2nd season is as good as his first. That probably won't happen, but another WR wouldn't hurt things. I think a Robert Meachem (New Orleans) or a guy like Mario Manningham (NY Giants) would help things. Defensively, they need to work on some things too finishing 24th against the pass and 25th against the run.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Make a good hire as head coach. I think Mike Sherman would be a good hire. After that, I think you need to look at the defense, the offense, the special teams. I don't think the Buccaneers were a big problem on the field this year, as much as their attitude was the problem with the team's quitting attitude. The Falcons could have probably hung 70 on them if they had wanted to in the regular season finale. Your leaders need to be leaders, and you need to make a good hire at head coach. I do think Raheem Morris will be a good head coach one day, but right now is probably a little too soon.

NFC West

San Francisco 49ers
Biggest overachievers in the league this year. Jim Harbaugh should definitely be the Coach of the Year in my opinion. The 49ers not giving up a rushing touchdown or 100 yard rusher until Week 16 is incredible. I think eventually the 49ers will need to look at upgrading at quarterback and adding a veteran wide out since Braylon Edwards certainly didn't pan out. David Akers could be the team's MVP.

St. Louis Rams
Again, another team where the head coach hire is critical to the success of the franchise. They have a franchise quarterback in Sam Bradford. Steven Jackson isn't getting any younger but I don't think he needs to be replaced, yet. Wide Receiver I think is a position of need, retaining Brandon Lloyd wouldn't be a bad start. Defensively, I think they should look in the secondary, but again this is a team that had problems getting Josh Brown on the field, for PAT's or field goals, so that means your offense is what needs the work.

Arizona Cardinals
Kevin Kolb being injured for most of the season doesn't help. While we are on topic of Kevin Kolb, after what happened Week 1 of his starting career when he was playing for Philadelphia against Green Bay, and he was taken out with injury (I believe concussion) and replaced by Vick, never got the job back, Kolb's career may never be the same. I think Arizona has to give him some time though and not say "We are done with you. It's John Skelton's team now". I think the loss of Steve Breaston also hurt. Beanie Wells finally was the running back that they thought he would be, and they also have Ryan Williams waiting in the wings next year. Defense might need some upgrades. They also have one of the biggest game changers in the league in Patrick Peterson (more as a return man right now, although I think he can be a dynamic corner as well).

Seattle Seahawks
First and foremost, re-sign Marshawn Lynch. Lynch had an outstanding season (he's in my top 10 of MVP candidates in the league). I think they need a quarterback, Tavaris Jackson is not the long term solution. I will admit, I was wrong on Pete Carroll. I didn't think he would succeed as a NFL coach again, with his rah-rah attitude, but it has been working. Seattle is a tough place to play and the defense has been tough as well. Seattle could be in competition in this cluster we call the NFC West.

It took me a week to write this (starting and stopping), so we'll see how long it will take me to get the AFC done. Stay tuned

Sports Predictions for 2012

Am I right a lot? Not near as much as I think I am. But, I did decide let me try to look into my crystal ball and make some sports predictions for the next 12 months. I hope to get 2 right.

* We will be on the path for the super fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. The two guys will fight in November, but each will take a tune up fight before then. Manny Pacquiao will take a tune up with Timothy Bradley, while Floyd Mayweather Jr. will take on a game Erik Morales.

* Concussions and injuries will force Sidney Crosby to retire from the NHL, with all of asking how good could he have been.

* Peyton Manning will retire before the 2012 NFL season, leaving the Colts no choice but to select Andrew Luck.

* Golf's Majors winners will include Tiger Woods (Masters), Rory Mcllroy (U.S. Open), Lee Westwood (British Open) & Mike Weir (PGA Championship).

* No man or woman will win more then one tennis major.

* Dale Jr. will win the Daytona 500. Denny Hamlin will win the Sprint Cup Points Championship

* Albert Pujols struggles, and hits no better then .280

* Robert Griffin III leads the Washington Redskins to the playoffs.

* Cowboys will fire Jason Garrett after the 2012 season, and replace him with Lovie Smith. Ron Rivera will leave Carolina and take over for Smith in Chicago.

* Miami Heat win the NBA Championship over the Memphis Grizzlies in 5.

* North Carolina wins the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship over Kentucky.

* Virginia will win the ACC Coastal in football in 2012.

* LSU beats Alabama for the National Championship next week.

* Green Bay & Pittsburgh meet in a Super Bowl rematch with the Packers winning 27-17.

* The Boston Red Sox finish 4th in the AL East. The Red Sox will be involved in a blockbuster trade with the Texas Rangers at the trading deadline, or in the offseason and will acquire either Elvis Andrus or top SS prospect Jackson Profar.

* The Yankees win the World Series over the Cardinals in 6 games.

* MLB Award winners include John Danks (A.L. Cy Young), Roy Halladay (N.L. Cy Young), Prince Fielder (A.L. MVP as a member of the Texas Rangers) & Troy Tulowitzki (N.L. MVP)

* With the success of Cam Newton & Robert Griffin III in the pro ranks, Logan Thomas will be a projected Top 5 pick after the 2012 season, but he will come back to Virginia Tech and win the Heisman Trophy his Senior Year and be the number 1 pick of the 2013 NFL Draft.

I think that's a good start, if you want to bet on any of these predictions, my advice to you is don't.

Meet a Member of "The Sports Buffet Podcast" team: Introducing the Knucklehead

A goal of mine when starting up The Sports Buffet Podcast.com was to have other voices then mine, whether it be throught podcasted interviews (which should be starting again very soon) or whether it be through the blogs. One of our fine bloggers, who is never at a loss for words (whether on paper or out of his mouth), is the Knucklehead. In an attempt for you to get to know the team of "The Sports Buffet Podcast", I will be doing interviews with the members of our team so you can get to know them better. Here is a recent chat I had with the Knucklehead.

Bob Alvis: Tell us a little bit about yourself, and where your love of sports came from and how it developed.

Knucklehead: I grew up in San Diego California with lots of professional sports all around. My dad was a HUGE sports fan and we spent much of my time growing up at Jack Murphy Stadium (Now silly Qualcom Park). We saw tons of Padres and Chargers games there as well as many pro soccer games. As I grew older, my love for sports became even more than my dads and expanded to include college basketball upon moving to North Carolina at age 11.

BA: The title of your blog, Sports from the DOME, what led you to that title and what will readers get reading Sports from the DOME?

KH: The Sports from the dome title has two meanings actually. I am proudly bald as can be thus that version of the dome. Also, sporting events are often held in domes, so there is the other. You can expect lots of varitry from the blog, and maybe a little of opinion too. OK, who am I kidding, I am extremely opinionated and different, and you will pick that out right away.

BA: Time for a few quick takes going on in the world of sports. I'll throw out a topic and you give me your take, yay or nay style. Michael Vick being reinstated to the NFL?

KH: YAY - Look the man has served the time for the crime. Truly he served more than someone with less notoriety would have. So, let's move on. If some team wants him, then more power to them. We have an NFL full of repeat offenders for much worse crimes to other people, so he deserves a chance. Now, ask me if I think he is worth anything as an NFL QB, and you'll get a totally different answer (can you say WR?). By the way, I say re-instate Pete Rose too.

BA: A College football playoff. Yay or Nay?

KH: Did you say quick hit? WOW! look I say yay, but I think it will never happen for greedy money reasons. I am actually for a 8 team playoff that ties in with the current BCS. Otherwise this topic is too long for a quick hit.

BA: Winning team in the Major League Baseball All Star Game being awarded home field advantage, yay or nay?

KH: NAY - I think it should be in the hands of the contending teams themselves not the whole league. EARN IT. I liked the way it was, and think they tried too hard to manufacture All-star excitement. It's also silly to let one meaningless game decide an important facet of a best of 7 game series.

BA: Expanding the men's NCAA basketball tournament. Yay or Nay?

KH: In a word - NO! Look, all the extra tourneys are already a joke. They don't fave anywhere near the draw or excitement of the field of 65. Why fix what ain't broke? The teams know what it takes to get in, and have consolation tourneys if they don't. The only thing I say is to add 3 more play in games so there is one for each region. That's it.

BA: Will Soccer ever be a major sport in the United States? Yay or Nay?

KH: Nay - Every country where Soccer (futbol) is a mojor sport doesn't have the NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL stealing all the best athletes first. Unfortunately US Soccer will always be to European soccer what Canadian Football is to the NFL. That is, a cheap imitation at best.

Now, "One on One with Bob Alvis" was always a favorite on "Talking High School Sports" and on "The Sports Buffet". Now, we bring the sports version of "One on One with Bob Alvis", 11 sports questions for the Knucklehead.

BA: Your ONE die hard sports team?

KH: The San Diego Super Chargers. My favorite sport, my favorite team.

BA: Your 1st Sports Memory as a Kid?

KH: OK, you’ve confused me. (BA Comment: Knucklehead lives in the state of confusion)Surprise! My first sports memory is of me playing soccer in the rain at age 4 or so with my thick Buddy Holly glasses almost completely obscured. My first sporting event memory is from a San Diego Padres game in the mid 70’s. I was probably around 6 or 7. The Padres played the Pittsburgh Pirates (with those ugly shaped hats they had) and Mr. Curly Randy Jones was on the hill for the Padres. I remember the game going 14 innings, but I can’t remember for sure who won. I remember it happily though so I’m sure the Pads won. My mom tells me we went another time when I was younger to a double header where both games went extras (14 and 13 innings). My dad never left a game early, so we stayed for both.

BA: Your 1st game you ever attended.

KH: OK, first off thanks for making me feel really old. I have been to so many games over my life that I can’t seem to remember what the first one was. I would be pretty sure it was a Padres game.

BA: If you could attend one specific event in the past, what event would you attend (like a specific game, event) and why?

KH: Easy, the Epic in Miami playoff game from January of 1982 between The Dolphins and the Chargers. I have watched the NFL films show on the game many times. What an amazing game. It was very competitive and had lots of out of the ordinary happenings. Kellen Winslow’s performance alone, makes it my obvious pick. The Chargers coming out on top after the marathon game helps too.

BA: If you could attend any sports event what would you attend and why?

KH: I immediately thought about the Super Bowl. But with the advent of HDTV, I think I’d rather watch that from home. So, I think I’d say the World Cup. It is an event I’d like to take in the whole experience, the games and the whole atmosphere.

BA: You can go to dinner with any 3 athletes past or present, who's eating with you?

KH: Tony Gwynn is definitely there as my favorite MLB player of all time. Dan Fouts is there as well since he is etched in my childhood mind as the greatest QB I ever saw in person. The third one is hard, but I’d have to say Gayle Sayers. He just seemed like a great guy, and man what an amazing athlete. I still say he might one of the best Running Backs ever. He only played 68 games and yet he’s in the hall of fame. Boy what a dinner that would be.

BA: Who are the 4 people that you would put on your Sports Mount Rushmore and Why?

KH: WOW! This might just be the most difficult question of all time. Let’s see what I can distill out of the many names that come to mind. I’ll go with one from each of the 4 major sports. I am not a Hockey fan, and even I’m smart enough to say Wayne Gretzky. The guy was amazing enough to make me watch. He was so ridiculously dominant, it was unreal. Next I’d have Hank Aaron. The man just played ball and played it at a high level for long enough to eclipse the sports highest record for a long time (I think he should still hold it). Now it’s time for some sweetness. Walter Payton still lives in my memory as the best running back I’ve ever watched. There are a bunch of great ones right up there with him, but I have to give him the edge again because of his dominance. I’m no NBA guy. Read my blog and you’ll see that. I’ve gone back and forth between Larry Bird and Michael Jordan and my Carolina ties helped Air Jordan win out.

BA: Who are 4 Sportscasters that you would put on your Sports Mount Rushmore and Why?

KH: Billy Packer, Dick Vitale, Marv Albert, and Bryant Gumbel. What’s that? Oops sorry, I thought you said Mt. Trashmore. (BA's Comment: Knuckleheads Views are his and his alone and are not endorsed by "The Sports Buffet Podcast." Please don't deny us for an interview Mr. Packer, Mr.Vitale, Mr.Albert or Mr.Gumbel) Let’s try again. I’d have to have Jack Buck on there. I spent many a late night as a teen in North Carolina listening to him call Card’s games on Clear Channel AM waves. Then I would have 2 other classic voices that cut through my memories: Harry Kalas who I especially remember from hours of NFL Films footage, and Mel Allen whose This Week in Baseball was a Saturday morning staple for me for years. Then I would have to cap it off with Al Michaels. I just love the way he calls games and always have.

BA: If you had to send your son/daughter to play a sport and anyone could coach them, who would you want coaching them (Top 3)?

KH: I’ve never really thought about this one. Let’s go with: 1. College Basketball, Dean Smith, 2. College Football – Mark Richt, and 3. NFL – Joe Gibbs

BA: If you had ultimate power and could change any rule in sports what rule would you change?

KH: This is going to sound crazy, but I would say none. Nothing really stands out to me as a horrible rule. I mean there are quite a few rules that I think are unnecessary, but none that rise to the level that they must go. I watch the games for the excitement, the emotion, and the competition. If you put a gun to my head, I’d say the tuck rule in the NFL. It makes no sense, and is way too easy to mess up.

BA. Stuck on a desert island and you get to take 3 DVDs of anything related to sports, whether it is a game, event, movie, whatever. What do you take?

KH: I would need to have Hoosiers and Rudy right off the bat. And it’s really convenient since I already own both DVDs. I would then like a DVD of the best Chargers Games of all time. Want to buy that one for me?

More on Steve McNair

More is coming in from Nashville on the death of former Tennessee Titans QB, Steve McNair. The woman found dead with McNair was 20 year old Sahel Kazemi. The Nashville police department is currently not searching for any suspects, which is leading many to suspect it could have been a murder-suicide. The Tennessean has excellent and extensive coverage, which you should check out for more details.

Rich Glover
When I think of Steve McNair, I think of a tremendous leader. From what I've heard he was a great leader in the locker room and many players looked up to him and admired the way he played the game. He always played the game with tremendous passion and toughness, which probably resulted in the many injuries that he obtained throughout his career. Although he wasn't my favorite player, I had lots of respect for McNair because he played the game just as hard as anyone and he showed great amounts of toughness and leadership.

The one memory that stands out just like for most people, was when he took the Titans to the Super Bowl against the Rams. That was one of the greatest Super Bowls ever played with one of the most exciting finishes ever.

Will Stafford
When I think Steve McNair, I think of someone who always put the team first. He never looked out for himself, as he always put the team first. McNair was probably one of the few that didn't play the game for the money, he played it because he loved the game. McNair was also a family man. Often times McNair would bring his sons to the practice facility with him. He called them "my greatest accomplishment"

My big Steve McNair memory is the Super Bowl vs. the Rams. Kurt Warner & Steve McNair, two of the most talented and, just all around good guys, going to for the trophy.
RIP Steve, You will be missed.

An Untimely Passing

I am an ESPN/ESPN News hawk. However, I had just come in from a Saturday mowing of the front yard when I checked my Facebook (I am a Facebook hawk too) and saw Will Stafford's status update which read, "Steve McNair murdered in Nashville." I was floored. Granted, I hadn't thought of Steve McNair in a while, but you don't expect 36 year old former professional athletes to be murdered.

While police haven't released the details of McNair's death (and the unidentified woman also found dead), it's definitely a sad situation. 99 times out of 100 when a life is lost, it's sad. McNair, a former MVP on the field, was also a MVP off the field. He was very active in the Nashville community, and also helped with relief efforts during Hurricane Katrina.

McNair came within a Mike Jones tackle of a possible overtime in Super Bowl XXXIV. I think McNair should go down as one of the more underrated quarterbacks in NFL history. McNair was mobile before mobile became real cool (if it's cool now). He wasn't the passer that Steve Young was, and probably wasn't the rusher/scrambler that Donovan McNabb is. However, McNair was equally slick with his arm and feet. McNair threw 174 touchdowns and rushed for another 39. McNair shared the 2003 NFL MVP award with Peyton Manning.

If somebody said to me "What will you remember most about Steve McNair?" I would say tough. Lots of times McNair may not have practiced during the week, but he was there on Sunday ready to go. McNair may have been banged up, knicked up and everything else, but he was there on Sunday. When I think of McNair, I think of a football player who was tough as nails, and ready to go on Sunday.

Who wants T.O?

Terrell Owens is a disruptive teammate, I have no issue with that. However, I can't believe that only two NFL teams (according to the Mortensen Polling Group) are interested. Supposedly, those two teams are the Raiders and Titans. I don't believe that. I could probably list half a dozen teams in addition to the Titans and Raiders that would take Terrell Owens. People say that Owens is a cancer, he is devisive in the locker room, and so on and so forth. But, he is not Brandon Marshall, he is not Plaxico Burress, he is not a guy who gets in domestic incidents or trouble off the field like that. Is he an idiot? Probably so, but I think between the lines, you can count on Owens. If you want Owens to be a team leader, then you need to look elsewhere.

Six other teams that could take Owens aside from the Titans and Raiders.

1. Washington Redskins: Dan Snyder has a thing for names and stars, and he hasn't signed one on the offensive end in a long time. Plus, he'd send Santana Moss into the spot where he belongs, the number 2 reciever.

2. Chicago Bears: Your starting recievers are Rashied Davis and Devin Hester. Do I really need to go on?

3. Jacksonville Jaguars: Mike Tice, an assistant with the Jaguars, had to deal with Randy Moss. I don't think Moss and Owens are that different, so I think Owens could fit in Jacksonville.

Okay, so maybe I can only think of 3 other teams.

Random Thoughts

Time for some of my random thoughts from the world of sports (I promise I will try to start posting with regularity. Not necessarily random thoughts, but just more regularity with posting)

* The Colts released Marvin Harrison yesterday. I think this is more of a cost cutting move, rather then a performance move. Even with Harrison's recent legal troubles (or legal acquisitions), Marvin is still perceived as one of the good guy's in the NFL. I think Harrison will have several pads in which he could land on. I consider Philadelphia, Minnesota, Jacksonville, Chicago amongst the good landing spots. But, there are a lot of teams that could use Marvin Harrison's skills, expertise and leadership.

* One of my biggest pet peeves in sports is getting ready to take place in the NBA. It really burns me to no end (and a lot of people would ask why for two reasons; 1) It's the NBA and 2) Why is Alvis getting so worked up over such a trivial matter) but not to the point where I lose sleep over it, or I have a bad day or anything. Anyways, after that diatribe, the New York Knickerbockers have reached buy out terms with Stephon Marbury. I hate the fact that the buy out couldn't take place in the preseason or the first four months of the season. It just looks bad, I hate the fact that a team buys out a guy and then the next day, he is bought out and go signs somewhere else. If you get bought out, you should have to sit 30 days before being able to play with another team. I am not necessarily harboring ill will to the Knicks and Celtics (which is where Marbury is going to sign) but this is the most recent example.

* A signing in Major League Baseball that probably went under the radar, but I think could be one of the steals of the Hot Stove season is Garret Anderson to the Braves. Anderson, is a 15 year veteran, has spent his entire career in Anaheim/Los Angeles with the Angels. Anderson, lowest batting average for a season in which he has played over 100 games, is .280. For some guys, their highest batting average for a season in which they have played over 100 games is .280. I think the Braves have a consistent option that they can stick in either corner outfield position, and I honestly think at this point in time, Anderson is a better signing then Griffey Jr (although, I don't think Griffey Jr. is a bad signing).

The Super Bowl pregame show started about 4 days ago, as NBC gives us a full 4 days of pregame coverage. Here's what you may have missed.

- On "Hardball", Chris Matthews interviewing Kurt Warner's garbage man, after the garbage man, revealed he knows Joe the Plumber. Matthews, refers Warner's sanitation collector, as Jim the Trash Hauler.

- Matt Lauer on the "Today show" interviewed Ann Coulter, asking her what does she have against Byron LEFTwich. Coulter, dodges the question and plugs her new book titled "I'm Still Talking, so Shut Up Matt". Willard Scott also makes a cameo to wish Morten Anderson a Happy 100th.

- On "Countdown", Keith Olbermann counts down his top 10 "Worse People in the World" The results go as such.

- On the 16th hour of "Today", Kathie Lee and Hoda, guests are Joe Namath and Frank Gifford. A tipsy Namath says "Kiss me, Kathie Lee", while a sober Gifford says "Kiss me, Hoda."

- Jay Leno Hosts "The Chin Show", special guest: Bill Cowher.

- Bob Costas complains about the wild card system, saying only division winners should be allowed in the playoffs. Costas, also states that there should be no interleague play, and the designated receiver should be eliminated.

- David Gregory hosts "Meet the Press" with Jay Glazer (FOX Sports), Adam Schefter (NFL Network), Chris Mortensen (ESPN), and Michael Silver (Yahoo). When the subject of journalistic integrity comes up, all four turn and look at Mortensen.

- Joe Biden hosts his own segment called "Listen to Joe". It has been running for 36 hours with no commercials. Biden has had no guests appear.

Now for the game, it somewhat reminds me of last year, no one is giving the NFC a chance. Do I think the Cardinals can win? Yes. Do I think they will? No. Mike Tomlin will prove his worth and coach the Steelers for another 20 years (which in today's NFL, is like 40 years). I like Roethlisberger to manage the game, and I like the Steelers defense to control the game. I think some of the Cardinals are just going to be happy to be there and it will show on certain plays. I do expect a low scoring and close affair. Let's call it Steelers 20 Cardinals 14.

Crennel, Marinelli and Mangini Out

Well, I am 1 for 2 so far.

Detroit fired Rod Marinelli this morning. No one should be surprised. Some people just aren't cut out to be head coaches and maybe Marinelli fits that bill. I think Detroit is bad, but I don't think they need help at EVERY position. Most positions, yes. Every position, no. They don't need a running back, they have Kevin Smith. They don't need a # 1 Wide Reciever, they have Calvin Johnson. I heard something interesting bantered about on ESPN 2's 1st & 10 last week. What if, the Patriots and Lions talked, and one said "Hey, you give us two 1st round picks (presumably this year's and next) and we'll give you Tom Brady."

Would you do this deal if you are the Lions? Would you do this deal if you are the Patriots? I think it has pros and cons for both sides. I'll discuss that in a later blog.

Eric Mangini out as the New York Jets head coach. Somewhat surprised, but not shocked. Rumors of him not getting along with Brett Favre kind of doomed him. If you don't get alone with the star, you are more expendable then the star. If I were the Jets, I don't know that I'd want Favre back for his football playing ability anymore.

Romeo Crennel out as head coach of the Cleveland Browns. Once again not a surprise. 4-12 with the expectations they had, somebody had to take the fall. This team is probably not that far away, but there are some things that need to be done to get the Dog Pound going again.

NFL Coaches.. Will they Stay or Will they Go?

I am now going to analyze on a % scale, in terms of % chance the coach has to return. To make it easy, everything will be broken into 10 % increments. Some will have detailed explanations, others will not. If I think there will be anew coach, I will list who I think the new coach will be.

AFC East
Buffalo Bills-Dick Jauron: 40 % chance he returns. Anytime your owner says we are going to meet and discuss the coach's future once the season is over, I don't think that bodes well for you. I personally don't think Jauron should have ever been hired. I would have hired Jim Haslett for the job when it was open a few years back. I don't think Jauron will survive, but I am not sure that he will be a victim of Black Monday. New Coach: Jim Haslett

New England Patriots-Bill Belichick: I am going to say 100 %. Bill Belichick relocates when Santa sets up shop on the South Pole.

New York Jets-Eric Mangini: I am going to say 60 % he returns. If Brett Favre was coming back, I'd change it to a 30-40 % chance he returns, since everyone in the NFL decides to cater to Brett Favre's every need and whim. But, since I don't think Brett Favre returns, I think Eric Mangingi does return. However, if the Jets take a step backwards next year (which I think they will) then Mangenius departs.

Miami Dolphins-Tony Sparano: 100 % chance he comes back. Only remote situation that I see him not coming back would be if Parcells left Miami and took Sparano with him, but I don't see that happening because if Sparano leaves, it would probably cost another team a draft pick or two. Even though the Dolphins turnaround has been one of the best in NFL history, I don't see a team giving up a draft pick or two for Sparano.

AFC North
Pittsburgh Steelers-Mike Tomlin: Unless Mike Tomlin decides he wants to leave the NFL and join the monastery, 100 % he's back in the Steel City.

Cincinnati Bengals-Marvin Lewis: 30 % chance Marvin returns to Cincy. If I was Marvin, I'd want to get fired, because I think (and I am probably not alone) Cincinnati is one of the worst jobs in the NFL. The Bengals problems are more then the head coach, but I think if you get rid of him, then you overhaul the rest of the team (Bye bye Ocho Cinco, T.J. Housh) and just start fresh. I think Marvin Lewis will get another job in the NFL, he might just have to go in the booth or studio for a year, or take a coordinator's spot. New Coach: Mike Hermerdinger

Cleveland Browns-Romeo Crennel: 0 % chance he returns. I hate to knock people from the Lynchburg area, but I don't think there is anyway in the world you can bring Romeo back to Cleveland. Especially when you lose your security blanket (General Manager Phil Savage). This Browns team has underachieved probably more then any other team in the NFL. Unfortunately, someone has to take the fall for the poor play by Cleveland, and it's going to be Romeo. I don't know that he gets another head coaching job for a long time. Coordinator, yes. Head coach, I just don't think he gets another shot for a long time. New Coach: Marty Schottenheimer.

Baltimore Ravens-John Harbaugh: 100 % chance he comes back. You normally don't get a pink slip when your team makes the playoffs, after missing the previous season. Harbaugh returns for season 2.

AFC South
Tennessee Titans-Jeff Fisher: 100 % chance he comes back. Fisher is probably the best coach in the NFL, and I think he has a job for as long as he wants it.

Indianapolis Colts-Tony Dungy: 60 % chance he comes back. If he wants to come back, it's 100 %. But, has Tony has enough of the league? I don't know, for the Colts sake I hope not. Even if Dungy steps out of the game, I can't say for certain hat he is done in the NFL. If he leaves, obviously Jim Caldwell is the guy who steps in.

Jacksonville Jaguars-Jack Del Rio: 60 % chance he comes back. If he has another one of the seasons, then I'll decrease it to about 20 %, but for now, I think Del Rio comes back. I don't really know why I am so certain he comes back. The Jags weren't really banged up this season or anything, they stayed healthy for most of the year, they just underachieved. Even though, I rank it at 60 % he comes back, I wouldn't be shocked if he got fired. But, I say he returns.

Houston Texans-Gary Kubiak: I say 70 % chance he is back. I think Houston has fared well this year, and next year I would actually give them a legitimate chance of making the postseason, But, I think Kubiak is safe for now and the foreseeable future.

AFC West
Oakland Raiders-Tom Cable: I am going to say 60% he returns. The Raiders did beat Tampa Bay, I think that's going to carry some weight in Al Davis' eyes. Plus, if Cable is going to listen to Al, bow to Al, and not be defiant like Lane Kiffin will, I think Cable returns.

Kansas City Chiefs-Herm Edwards: I am going to say 60 % chance Herm comes back. I don't know why I go with that number, but a good chunk of me is just saying Herm returns to rile up my friend and huge Chiefs fan, Jeff Fawver. I honestly think people like Herm, think he's a good motivator, things of that sort and I think that what keeps him hanging around. I don't know why all these people think these things but I think they do think these things.

San Diego Chargers-Norv Turner: I am going to say 60 % chance Norv comes back. I don't know that he should come back, because I think Norv is one of the more overrated coaches their is. Plus, the Chargers (in some people's eyes) had Super Bowl aspirations. If you have Super Bowl aspirations and finish 8-8, I don't know that you deserve to come back. Plus, if the Broncos don't go totally in the tank, then the Chargers aren't in the playoffs.

Denver Broncos-Mike Shanahan: I am going to say 70 % chance that Shanahan comes back. I know they folded like a house of cards down the stretch, but I think Shanahan has unbelievable job security. He has been there in the good and bad times, and I think he remains coach of the Broncos.

NFC East
Washington Redskins-Jim Zorn: I am going to say 40 % chance he returns. I know he squabbled with Clinton Portis (Dan Snyder's Boy) earlier in the year and the Redskins actually stepped backwards later in the season rather then continue to hold the line. This team was 6-2 and finished the season 2-6. That's 8-8. For a patient person like Dan Snyder, I don't know that 8-8 will satisfy, regardless if Zorn is in his first year or not. I am sure Snyder would throw big money at Bill Cowher if he came back. I don't know that Mike Holmgren would take a job with a meddlesome owner. Other names, I could see Snyder trying to lure Bill Parcells (but would Parcells want to take it after dealing with one meddlesome owner?). To be honest, I don't think Snyder is that meddlesome of an owner as long as you win. Guys like Jerry Jones and Al Davis want their hands in things win, lose or draw. But, I think Zorn doesn't come back and Snyder looks to make a splash with a big name. New Coach: I really don't know. I am afraid to guess, I think if he got rid of Cerrato, and gave total control to someone, I think he could get a Cowher or a Parcells. I really wonder if there is enough money in the world to get a Bill Belichick, which i'd be really curious to see. I think Snyder will go with a big name, but not a college guy. He went there and did that with Steve Spurrier. The only college guy I could see him going with is Pete Carroll. But, if I was forced to make a pick for Snyder, I would go with Steve Mariucci (I don't know that you could call Mariucci a big name, but that's just what my big, fat gut says.)

Dallas Cowboys-Wade Phillips: I am going to say 70 % chance he does not return. I know what Jerry Jones said prior to Week 17, but I don't think there is a way in the world you can justify bringing Wade back after yesterday. There's a ton of fighting in the locker room (depending on who you want to believe) and to me Wade has lost control of that team. I believe if you lose control of your team as a coach, at that point, you have to go. No if's, and's, or but's. New Coach: Again a tough one, it has to be similar to the Raiders, where I think it has to be a coach who is going to have to put up with Jerry in his ear all year. With that being said, I can't imagine it's a guy like Cowher or someone who would want both responsibilities. Neither of these names are sexy, but the Cowboys don't always go for the splash. I am going to say the 'Boys go with either Ron Rivera or Karl Dorrell.

New York Giants-Tom Couglin: 100 % he comes back. Funny, how a couple of years ago, he was on the chopping block and now he is probably considered one of the top 5 coaches in the league.

Philadelphia Eagles-Andy Reid: 60 % he comes back. I wouldn't be shocked if he didn't, but considering how the Eagles are ending the season, I think it's tough to justify him not coming back If Andy Reid doesn't want to come back that's one thing, but I think he will. I see him pulling a Holmgren at some point, where he announces prior to the season that he is not going to come back.

NFC North
Chicago Bears-Lovie Smith: 90 % he comes back. I thought the Bears would be terrible this year (I should listen to my friend, Mike Fisch more. Don't tell him I said that.) but they haven't been nearly as bad as I thought they would be and I credit Lovie Smith for that. The Bears offense is still what I'd call below average. But, I think Lovie is one of the more underrated coaches in the NFL. Lovie stays in Chicago, and this team could win the NFC North next year.

Green Bay Packers-Mike McCarthy: This is a tough one to me. I want to say 50 %, but that's really straddling the fence. So, I am going to say 60 % he comes back. Like Del Rio, it wouldn't shock me if McCarthy didn't return. I think the Jets missing the playoffs actually helps McCarthy's cause. If the Jets made the playoffs, I think McCarthy is axed. Also, if Green Bay lost to Detroit, I could also see McCarthy's head on the chopping block. But, I think McCarthy comes back, but he isn't on the sturdiest of ground as we head into the 2009 season.

Minnesota Vikings-Brad Childress: 70 % he comes back. The Vikings made the playoffs. In some ways, I think the Vikings are one of the more underachieving teams in the league, but in a way, I think they are working with the best they have too. I think people anointed the Vikings as a legit contender a little too quick though.

Detroit Lions-Rod Marinelli: 0 % he comes back. I'd love to give this a 10 %, because I have never really heard a bad word about Rod Marinelli, but you can't bring back a coach who has had a winless season. I mean you would think out of 16 games, you could find 1 win somewhere. I think Marinelli has to go, they need a GM, they need a quarterback, they need some defensive help. Lots of things the Lions need, but unfortunately they can't keep Marinelli. New Coach: Brian Billick. No reason, just a hunch.

NFC South
Atlanta Falcons-Mike Smith: 100 % he comes back. Do I even need to address this? Next question.

Carolina Panthers-John Fox: 100 % he comes back. Do I need to give reasons why? Next.

New Orleans Saints-Sean Payton: 80 % he returns. I think he's a good coach, just some bad breaks. The Saints will be back, I mean it's not like they were dismal. They did finish 8-8.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers-Jon Gruden: 80 % he returns. I don't think they can get anyone better, plus Gruden's a good coach. I know they tanked down the stretch, but I am bringing Shanahan back and they tanked down the stretch also.

NFC West
San Francisco 49ers-Mike Singletary: 100 % he comes back. He just signed a 5 year deal.

St. Louis Rams-Jim Haslett: 40 % he comes back I don't think he did a bad job. Plus, it's never easy taking over during the season for the head coach, when you weren't the head coach (I know he was an assistant on the staff.) But, I like Haslett and I think he should come back and I think the Rams could be vastly improved next season. With that being said, I think Haslett will take over in Buffalo and won't be back with the Rams. New Coach: Jim Schwartz, Defensive Coordinator for the Titans.

Seattle Seahawks-Mike Holmgren: 0 % he returns. He said he wasn't coming back, I believe him when he said he wasn't coming back. I think he will return at some point to coaching. New Coach: Jim Mora Jr. is coach in waiting, so I have to go with him.

Arizona Cardinals-Ken Whisenhunt: 100 % chance he returns. The Bidwell's are cheap and why put together another coaching search when you have a guy that took you to the playoffs.

NFL MVP... Top 5 Candidates?

As the NFL season draws to a conclusion, there is a lot of debate about what teams will make the playoffs, and who will win the Super Bowl? However, I am here to debate the MVP race and give you who my final five candidates for MVP.

1. Chad Pennington- The Dolphins were 1-15 last year. 1-15! Obviously, you have to give the Tuna (Bill Parcells) and Tony (Sparano) some credit for that. But, I think you have to give Chad Pennington the veteran quarterback some credit as well. Pennington has, in my opinion, outplayed the person that the Jets acquired (Brett Favre) and remember the Jets had serious discussions about who was the better choice for them, Kellen Clements or Chad Pennington? With all that being said, even if the Dolphins don't make the playoffs, (and I don't think they will, because I think they will lose to the Jets) you have to give credit for what they have done. This is not a postseason award. This is the NFL regular season MVP.

2. Matt Cassel- A guy that did not even start in college, was really probably never counted on to play with the Patriots, unless it was a 30 point margin with 2:15 to go in the 4th. All that being said, he has just stepped into a situation, where he is filling in for a guy who has won three Super Bowls. With the Patriots falling to the Giants last year, I think expectations with all key Patriots returning, were the Patriots were just going to pick up where they left off. Once Brady went down, I think most people (not just Patriots fans) thought "Well, the Patriots will be picking in the top 10 next year in the draft, this is now a throwaway year." Clearly, that has not been the case. Obviously most think Belichick is a genius. I don't dispute that, but as William Campbell High School's head coach Brad Bradley has told me before, "Coaches lose games, players win games". While I don't know that we can say that is always absolute, it does ring true more then it rings false. I think Cassel deserves strong consideration for MVP, because like I said earlier, this is the NFL MVP. It's a regular season award, not a postseason award.

3. Peyton Manning- The Colts were also somewhat left for dead. After a red hot start by the Tennessee Titans, and a very sluggish start by the Colts, most wrote the Colts off. Now, obviously they didn't win the division, but I think if you took a poll of 100 NFL fans right now, and asked them "What team would you not want your favorite team to face in the playoffs?", I think most would say Colts. Peyton Manning has led this team, and done most of this without Joseph Addai, and an aging Marvin Harrison. After the first few games of the season, I don't think most people would have given the Colts a chance. The quarterback is always the focal point of a team. He gets credit for the wins and blame for the losses. With all that being said, I think you have to give Peyton Manning credit for getting the Colts back to a legitimate Super Bowl contender.

4. Michael Turner- The Falcons success should be credited to a lot of people, Mike Smith, the rookie head coach. The rookie quarterback, Matt Ryan should also get some credit as well. However, Mike Smith wants to establish the run in each game, and Michael Turner has established that run for the Falcons time after time through the first 15 games of the season. Could Jerrious Norwood have done the same thing? Maybe, but I doubt it. Also, anytime you have people say, "Did the Chargers keep the wrong running back", that's pretty high praise. I realize that the topic is talk radio banter, but "burner" Turner has done a good job for the Falcons this year, and I think deserves serious consideration for the MVP as well.

5. Thomas Jones- I think that Brett Favre has helped this ball club get to a respectable point this year. But, Favre's year in the Big Apple has been aided tremendously by the running back from Big Stone Gap, Virginia. I think the other four candidates listed are probably stronger, but I think Jones deserves some votes. Everybody thinks "Brett, Brett, Brett" but number 4 is not nearly as effective and strong without Thomas Jones in the backfield.

My pick to win the most valuable player is...... Chad Pennington. To reiterate some previously stated points. The Dolphins were 1-15 last year. 1-15! Pennington has 1,230 less passing yards then Drew Brees, the leader. Pennington has 15 less touchdown passes then the leader, Phillip Rivers. However, Pennington took the Dolphins into a Brady-less Foxboro, where the Dolphins shouldn't have won, and they won. The Dolphins are in the playoff race and it's largely because of Chad Pennington. Pennington is a guy who was ripped in New York unmercifully. Most New Yorkers probably thought their paperboy had a better arm then Pennington. This Dolphins team was 0-2 headed into Foxboro, surely to go to 0-3 and Pennington and the Wildcat formation defeated the AFC East's Evil Empire. Granted, the Dolphins have only won one game against a team that will make the playoffs (the AFC West winner), but if you look at their five losses (Jets, Cardinals, Texans, Ravens and Patriots) one of those teams has already clinched a playoff spot, three have a chance in Week 17 and the Texans squeaked out a one point victory with 6 seconds left. With all this said, I think Chad Pennington is the league's MVP followed by Cassel, then I'd vote Turner and then Manning.

The Future of "The Sports Buffet" podcast

To all my loyal listeners of "The Sports Buffet" podcast, I appreciate you first off. I would love more comments on the podcasts, what you like, dislike and so forth and so on. You can always reach me by e-mail at TheSportsBuffet@verizon.net

With that being said, "The Sports Buffet" is going to be on a break or hiatus until probably the first of 2009. The site I have been using for "The Sports Buffet" is just not user friendly anymore and it has been very difficult to upload files. I encourage you to still go to the site and check out some of the older podcasts, to easier search for an episode (you can search by school, name, sport, whatever, by clicking here and typing in the keyword.

There are some other sites out there, but I just want to make sure the next site I go with is long term (even though My Podcast lasted me for longer then a year). I still intend to post "older" interviews and games from my days with WKDE and more. I firmly believe people want to hear new and fresh content, but I believe honoring those and featuring those that I have interviewed in the past should be featured across the world wide web as well. The "New" site is going to feature much more then just a podcast (hopefully) with hopeful links for all high school and college and pro sports fans, as well as stats and schedules and everything else a sports fan could want. I hope to make "The Sports Buffet" one stop shopping for all sports fans.

So, if you are a coach or athlete, and see that your interview has not been posted, please be patient. No one, but no one, is more fustrated by the lack of podcasts then yours truly. I have not forgotten about anything, as well as scheduling interviews and such. Hopefully, my blogs will take a more active role while the podcast is rebuilding, and will continue to be active after the podcast is reborn.

Finally, I also would like to take this opportunity to thank all the coaches, athletes, athletic directors, sports information people, other media members and anyone else that I pester for interviews, information and requests on a random basis. Reviewing My 5

An actual good week for me pick wise. College picks, I was 3-2. Now granted, the two I missed, I missed bad (at least I didn't take Texas Tech). LSU and Minnesota were unkind to me. However, the Orange (Syracuse), the Blue Devils (Duke) and the Beavers (Oregon State) came through.

On the Pro side, I am going to say I was 3-1-1. The Redskins and Seahawks was a push. The Browns continue to underachieve, as they were my lone blemish. Tampa Bay, New England and Indianapolis came through like champs.

I know everyone is anxious for my Turkey Day picks.

Reviewing my Preseason NFL Picks

What type of genius am I? How foggy is my crystal ball? Let's find out here.

My Super Bowl pick: New England and Dallas.
That went out the window essentially when Tom Brady went down for the season. I don't know that I can make an excuse with Dallas, because they have had no devastating injury. Granted, Tony Romo was out 2-3 games, but they played the Rams during that stretch and lost. Brad Johnson couldn't beat the Rams? Brad Garrett should have been able to beat the Rams, but I digress. I don't think my Super Bowl pick is going to hit. If you are interested in my "revised" Super Bowl pick, I like the New York football Giants and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

No major blunders here. I am not going to sprain my right hand or anything, by patting myself on the back or anything. However, I think you gotta give Evil Bill some credit. If you had told our friend, Joe Fan, that the Patriots would be 7-4 without Tom Brady, I think you would have gotten some weird looks. Even more so, Matt Cassell may be playing himself into a starting job somewhere next year. His potential suitors I think could involve Detroit, St. Louis, San Francisco, Seattle, Tampa Bay, and you never know maybe even Philadelphia. I know, I didn't list any great teams (or top teams right there) but top teams normally don't need a new quarterback.

Alright, let's look at a couple points. If you said Tennessee would be 10-1 right now, I expect your nose just grew. If you said you thought Jacksonville would be 4-7 after 11 games, I think your nose has grown some more to where we can put a tray on it. Give the Titans credit, they are playing very good football. Even with a loss to the Jets, that shouldn't put a damper on the Titans season. The Colts came out of the gate trotting. Peyton Manning struggled to start, Joseph Addai has been banged up, so I think with the Colts being 7-4, that's not bad for them. However, the Colts also have a lot of games in the "should have lost" or "almost lost" category. Jacksonville, 4-7, has to be up there for the most disappointing team in the NFL. I don't think they are more disappointing then Cleveland, but they have to be up there in the disappointment category. With that being said, I don't think Jack Del Rio loses his job. Houston has battled injury with Matt Schaub being knicked up. However, the Texans can take Steve Slaton (a former West Virginia Mountaineer) as a major bright point. So, I don't think my AFC South predictions make me a colossal idiot. I think anyone's revised version would have to have Tennessee first. If the Titans don't win the division at this point, it's a major choke job.

Alright, let's just get this out of the way, I am an idiot. I don't know what extraterrestrial inhibited my body to where I picked the Bengals 2nd. Picking the Steelers first, that doesn't take a lot of sense, but even with an associates degree (I am not trying to knock anyone who has completed an associates degree) an individual shouldn't have picked the Bengals 2nd. True Bengals fans may have been able to warn me that I was going to be dead wrong coming into the season, but I apparently didn't listen. Coming into the season, I thought an offense with Carson, Ocho and T.J. couldn't be all bad. I didn't sense Ryan Fitzpatrick being the captain of the ship of delinquents. You have to give credit to the Baltimore Ravens, John Harbaugh should get some consideration for AFC Coach of the Year. The Ravens have no true number 1 wide receivers in my eyes, Willis McGahee has not been a stud at the tailback spot, Todd Heap has been extremely disappointing (fantasy owners know what I'm talking about). But, Joe Flacco didn't get the memo that he's a rookie. The former Delaware Blue Hen has been excellent in his starting role. Flacco, who wasn't even suppose to be starting, has excelled in a role. I don't even think the most optimistic Ravens fan, would have pegged them to be 7-4. I love Romeo Crennel (you have to support Hill City natives), but I think the Browns have been the most disappointing team in the NFL. I didn't think there would be one game this year where the Browns would score under 21. The Browns haven't scored 21 in 6 of their 11 games this year, including 5 of their first 6, so therefore the Browns offense has disappointed me. Look at the schedule, I would have had the Browns at 7-4, not 4-7. The Browns should, in hindsight, have probably traded Derek Anderson while the iron was hot. Anderson struggled to start the year, and you knew when that happened, the Dog Pound was going to scream and holler for Brady Quinn. To say Braylon Edwards has had a case of the dropsies this season. I don't have exact numbers but anytime anyone watches a Browns game nowadays, even if you watch for only five minutes of real time, you can count on seeing an Edwards dropped pass. Anyways, my grade for picking the AFC North. Not good. I will slap myself in the face, back of the head or on the rump for poor AFC North picking.

Alright, I will raise my hand and a sign that says "I'm a dumbass", for picking the Raiders 2nd. I thought this division was so bad, that the Raiders would have a chance to be in 2nd place. Here's the sad part, they actually have a chance to be in 2nd place. Anyone who is a fan of an AFC West team, and has watched them for 11 games this season. My sympathies to anyone who has had to watch that. Let's sum up the division this way, the Raiders (who even with a 3-8 record are maybe the 2nd worst team in football) beat Denver 31-10 at Mile High. The division leading Denver Broncos lost to the Oakland Raiders, 31-10 at Mile High. 31-10! The Raiders, who hadn't scored a touchdown in over 200 plays, had the spirit of Kenny Stabler, Cliff Branch and everyone else who played for the Raiders that was a capable of scoring a touchdown (something this team has problems doing). Let's bottom line it this way, the AFC West stinks. Are my picks not dead on? Yes, but this division stinks.

Dallas has been somewhat disappointing. It's funny to say that about a 7-4 team, but the expectations were set so high for Jerry's group, anything short of 10-1 would have been underachieving. If you look at the last place team in the division, they are .500. The Eagles would be in contention for the lead in the AFC West. I don't really think there is a bad team in the division. Granted, the Eagles have problems (a few more after yesterday) but there problems are no worse then most teams. On that Eagles "controversy", at the end of the year, it may be time for Donovan McNabb and Andy Reid to go. McNabb to the Vikings, Reid can take the year off and then take another job after a year off. The Philadelphia fans are some of the most demanding fans in the world (in all sports). If they want to have some other coach and Kevin Kolb manning the ship to start next year. Good luck. I expect them to be a team under .500 at the week 11 mark if that happens. I am going to give myself an okay grade for this, but I really don't know with the way the NFC East is, if anyone could really screw up the NFC East prognostications.

Mike Smith should be the coach of the year for the Falcons. Anyone, who thought the Falcons would have 5 wins right now, stand up. Okay, now all those who are lying, sit down. Everyone should be seated. Matt Ryan, like Flacco, didn't get the memo about "playing like a rookie". Ryan, also can thank Michael Turner for a good portion of the team's success. The real coup would be if the Falcons could squeeze into the playoffs. The Saints have been disappointing, but not to the point where Sean Payton should be looking over his shoulder or anything. The Saints, wish list in the offseason, should be finding a corner and getting a running back who can just run the ball down someone's throat (granted a lot of teams would like someone like that), but I think Deuce McAllister has run his course. So, if you want Pierre Thomas or Aaron Stecker to be the bruiser, then that's fine. My NFC South shouldn't be viewed upon highly, but I'd be highly surprised to see anyone that had Atlanta finishing anywhere other then last.

Alright, here's my rationale for having Detroit 2nd. I thought this division was so bad headed into the season. I said to myself, "Why not the Lions?". Well, I forgot Matt Millen was in charge (earlier) and this is the Lions. I thought the Bears would be God awful. They have not. I didn't think Minnesota would be that good. In my opinion, they are not that good, so I was right on that one. The Packers have been .500 (maybe below .500 after tonight-hopefully since I am a Saints fan). I still think the Packers will be fine in the long run with Aaron Rodgers has the pilot of the team. My NFC North picks. I should get a big fat F for picking the Lions 2nd. I should actually have my blog revoked for that, but that won't happen (and it's not like anyone reads it anyways.)

I was almost dead on. I picked one out of four teams correct. To call the NFC West a Professional football conference, is an insult to professional football. All the old timers from the NFC West (especially those who are involved with the bottom 3 teams) should be rolling in their graves. This division has been a disgrace to Professional football. I am not going to even say anything else about this division, I don't think I should have to defend or condemn myself on these picks, because anyone that watches a game involving a NFC West team, should be given the medal of honor just for that.

Get out the Keys: Locks of the Week

Last week I took a week off. Good thing, because I would have done poorly, taking Texas against Texas Tech, and it would just go down from there.

My college locks
1. Take Rutgers -14. Rutgers host Syracuse. Do I need more of a reason then that? Syracuse is known for producing good sportscasters, and some good football players (Marvin Harrison, Donovan McNabb, Dwight Freeney) but nothing has walked through that door lately to rave about at the 'Cuse.

2. Take LSU + 3. LSU is hosting Alabama. Nick Saban strolls back into Baton Rouge, where he brought a national title to the Tigers. Guess what Nick? Les Miles has done that too. The Tigers have been a little up and down this year, but they'll be up for the 'Tide. Tigers win the game outright (but I am only obliged in the lock to say they'll cover the number).

3. Take Florida St - 5 1/2. I know Bobby Bowden would never admit this publically, but you have to think deep down, that he'd love to roll the Tigers. Even if the guys still on Clemson, are "Tommy's Kids". No Tiger's player is calling Tommy daddy right now. Take the Seminoles to win (obviously if they are going to cover the number) in the powerhouse football conference known as the ACC.

4. Take Michigan State - 9 1/2. Joe Tiller's Purdue Boliermakers are just not that great of a football team this season. That being said, I like what Michigan State is doing. In East Lansing, I think the Spartans can win by 10 or more.

5. Take UCLA + 8. I know UCLA has been spotty this year with success, but I think the Beavers of Oregon State can't win by more then 4 at best in Los Angeles. I say take the Bruins, dam it.

NFL Picks
This is where I have made money (well theoretical money). Let's see if I got another good week in me.

1. Take Green Bay + 2 1/2 at Minnesota. I don't feel great about this pick, but I feel good enough to make it. I really don't have any reasons behind this pick, other then the fact that I think Green Bay gets it done in the dome. Plus, to cover they only have to lose by less then 3 or win outright. I feel pretty good that they will do one of the two.

2. Take New Orleans + 1 at Atlanta. I am not going to lie, I don't feel good about this one at all. I don't know why I made the pick. Full disclosure, I am a Saints fan, which makes me want to pick Atlanta more, but I just see the "dirty birds" falling off a tree branch in this one. Take the Saints to win outright.

3. Take Philadelphia - 3 vs. the New York Football Giants. I think the Eagles defense is going to make Eli Manning's night a long one. I like the Eagles offense to put up at least 28 points in this one, and on Sunday night, I like Philadelphia.

4. Take Tennessee - 3 vs. Chicago. Hear is why I am taking the Titans, or any other team that would be playing the Bears this week: Rex Grossman. Enough said. With that being said however, don't think the Titans will go undefeated. They will lose next week at Jacksonville, but I'll tackle that next week.

5. Take Jacksonville - 6 1/2 at Detroit. I know people have thought Jacksonville is the league's biggest dissappointment. I don't agree with that. Can Daunte Culpepper be the Lions savior this week? In a word, no. Take the Jags to win by about 9, which would cover the spread.
